BMW X1 2023

The sole engine offered in the X1 is a Miller-Cycle 2L turbo four, with BMW notes is revised compared to the engine that powered the car last year. Horsepower is 241, up from 228 last year, with a stout 295 lb.ft of torque. Power reaches all wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission.

Like some other brands, like Subaru, BMW has moved to a new electric brake booster. Active safety equipment includes a forward collision warning, including for cyclists and pedestrians, automonous emergency braking and blind spot monitors that include a safe exit feature.

The exterior of the X1 is fronted by a gigantic version of the BMW twin-kidney grille motif. The gille is supplanted by a large air intake which itself is flanked by smaller piercings in the front fascia. The rest of the car is artless and generally unattractive. Inside, the driver faces a shallow but wide computer tablet with vehicle information in front of the driver and infotainment data over the centre console. The infotainment and climate controls are via a touch screen, which is never a suitable way to do things in a car on the move. The rest of the cabin is very interesting, relying on shapes rather than applied ornament to make for a visually calm cabin. With very similar dimensions to its predecessor, cabin space should be about the same, which was adequate space rather than generous.

With L.E.D. headlights, power front seats, power tailgate and auto climate control, the base X1 is reasonably well equipped. Despite the high entry point, buyers need to opt for the Premium Essential package to get expected features such as heated front seats and a heated steering wheel. The Premium Essential package adds a Harman-Kardon audio system, a head up display, a 360 degree camera system and self parking, at a fair price. Metallic paind is an $895 option but genuine alloy or wood cabin trim is priced at $250.

Below average predicted reliability. Engine and electrical problems are among the expected weak points. Complimentary “scheduled” maintenance for the first four years or 80,000 km. High servicing costs after the warranty expires. The APA recommends oil changes every six months or 8000 km even if the dealer charges you for them outside the complimentary service plan. Four year/80,000 warranty but no additional powertrain warranty after that. Leasing is a way to enjoy the car BMW of Canada extended warranty is recommended if you plan to keep your X1 past the four year/80,000 km warranty.
